Dr. Conrad Murray Could Testify At Michael Jackson Death Trial Dr. Conrad Murray Could Testify At Michael Jackson Death Trial

Dr. Conrad Murray's jury selection for his involuntary manslaughter trial stemming from the shocking death of pop superstar Michael Jackson is expected to begin on Wednesday, May 4th, and RadarOnline has exclusively learned that Dr. Murray wants to be put on the stand to testify.

It's anticipated that jury selection could take one week. The District Attorney will present evidence to the jury that backs up their claims that Dr. Murray is responsible for Jackson's death on June 25, 2009. Dr. Conrad Murray "will be playing an active role in his defense. Dr. Murray has made sure that his medical practice and patients are taken care of during the trial," a friend of Murray's tells RadarOnline

The source also says: "Dr. Murray wants to tell his version of events the day that Michael Jackson tragically died. Dr. Murray has maintained his innocence since he was formally charged. Dr. Murray's lawyers will make the tactical decision when it's their turn to present their witnesses at the trial about whether or not to put him on the stand. Dr. Murray truly has nothing to hide, and wants the jurors to hear what he has to say."

If Dr. Murray doesn't testify at the trial, his pal tells us: "Dr. Murray would probably do an interview after the trial, if his advisors approve it, to explain his story. There is so much that the public doesn't know. Dr. Murray is hopeful that at an appropriate time, he can elaborate on misconceptions about him and his care of Michael."

If convicted of the involuntary manslaughter charge, Dr. Murray could serve up to four years in state prison.

Calls seeking comment from Dr. Murray's spokesperson weren't immediately returned.

Trial of Michael Jackson's doctor could be delayed

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Defense lawyers asked for a delay in the start of Dr. Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial Friday because, they said, they need more time to answer new theories raised by the prosecution.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor scheduled a hearing for Monday morning to decide whether he will grant the continuance.

Testimony in the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor has been scheduled to start on May 9, with the jury to be chosen next week.

"I'm not saying what I'm prepared to do, because I need to hear and see more information," Judge Pastor said during a Friday afternoon hearing.

The possibility of a delay was raised during a hearing Friday morning when Pastor ruled prosecutors could call new expert witnesses, including one who would testify that there was no way Jackson could have self-ingested the drug that killed him.

Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff said he consulted with Dr. Murray after that hearing and they agreed they needed more time to prepare their expert testimony to counter the new prosecution expert.

"This is precisely the matter I fully expected that was going to happen when the defense said it wanted to go in 60 days," Pastor said.

Murray invoked his right to a speedy trial after January's preliminary hearing in which the prosecution's expert witness admitted he made a math mistake that supported the defense theory that Jackson may have given himself the fatal dose of propofol.

Propofol is a surgical anesthetic that the Los Angeles coroner ruled killed Jackson in combination with several sedatives found in his blood.

"I actually made a mistake on that," Dr. Richard Ruffalo testified during cross-examination, referring to his calculation of the levels of propofol in Jackson's stomach fluid.

Murray's lawyers suggest a frustrated and sleepless Jackson may have poured the surgical anesthetic propofol into his juice bottle while the doctor was out of his bedroom.

A new expert approved by Judge Pastor Friday will testify that he "concludes it was impossible for Michael Jackson to orally ingest" the fatal drug, prosecutor David Walgren said.

"Super expert Dr. Ruffalo prepared a 60-page report," Defense lawyer Michael Flanagan said in court Friday. "We got ready on that, but now the trial in this case will look nothing like the preliminary. I bet you they're not going to call Ruffalo."

The prosecution said the defense is always welcome to call the former prosecution expert.

"They are not calling their original 11 experts," Flanagan said. "They've got three brand new ones, which requires us to prepare all over again for these new theories and justifications of these theories."

The new experts will present "more detailed analysis, but not a new theory," Walgren said.

Judge Pastor said there had been a "massive investment of time and money" put toward the trial and a delay might be expensive. There are 171 potential jurors already "hardship qualified" for the trial, but a delay might require them to go through the process again.

Top Secret MJ Videos Protected by Armed Guards!
6/11/2011 1:00 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

The last videos of Michael Jackson were so top secret, they were transported in an unmarked truck, accompanied by armed guards in the dead of the night ... this according to new docs filed in the Conrad Murray manslaughter case.

You ask what Conrad Murray has to do with MJ videos? Well, Dr. Murray wants to see ALL of the rehearsal videos shot for the doomed "This is It" tour. Murray's lawyers believe it could show Michael was in such a frail condition ... there were many reasons for his death other than Propofol.

Murray's lawyers subpoenaed the tapes, but now Sony Pictures -- which has possession of the videos -- is objecting for several reasons. Sony claims there are more than 20 boxes of videos and it would cost $200,000 to log and reproduce all of them.

But in the docs, Sony describes how top secret the videos were to the studio. Sony lawyers say, "When they were transported to the Sony lot in Culver City, the transport in an unmarked truck was accompanied by armed guards in the dead of the night."

When the tapes were in an editing bay, security guards were posted outside the door and no Internet access was allowed in the room.

And a Sony honcho also submitted a declaration which says the videos "have a high monetary value inherent in their potential for future uses. Those uses include one or more 'anniversary editions.'"

Jury selection begins for Michael Jackson trial

    Posted: Aug 08, 2011 2:06 AM
    Updated: Aug 08, 2011 3:41 AM

Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's former personal doctor, is facing manslaughter charges in the singer's death. (Source: CNN)(CNN) - Jury selection is gearing up for the September trial of Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's former personal doctor who is facing charges in the singer's death.

The process for picking jurors for the manslaughter trial starts with a 30 page, 117 question document, which lawyers from both sides came up with a few months ago.

Answers that prospective jurors give to these questions will be poured over by the attorneys and their jury consultants.

Jo-Ellan Dimitrius, who's made a career of picking juries dating back to the OJ Simpson murder trial, looked over a copy of the questionnaire.

"Holy Cow, I'm just looking at the medications," she said.

In a case like this, Dimitrius said there will be people who may lie to get picked.

"The sad reality is that people have a hidden agenda, whether they want to write a book or they want their fifteen minutes of fame," she said.

The questionnaire lists 136 potential witnesses including Jackson's parents, brothers and sisters and his three children.

It also asks if, and even why, and individual saw the film about Jackson's last performing days, "This is It."

The prosecution is planning to show a clip from the documentary because they said it proves Jackson was in good health days before his death.

Potential jurors are also asked about their familiarity with a laundry list of 27 different prescription drugs, including propofol, the drug tied to his death.

"The juror who has a lot of personal experience and knowledge of the drugs and medications that are going to be talked about is going to be a better defense juror," Dimitrius said.

She said the defense also wants jurors who think Jackson was an oddball. She said prosecutors want the opposite - someone who's a Michael Jackson fan and believes the singer was manipulated during his life and wrongly accused of child molestation.

Ultimately, she said the best jurors are those who can stand up to pressure in the jury room.

"You want somebody who's strong who's not going to back down no matter what," she said.

It's likely that at least one question will be added about the Casey Anthony trial. Lawyers on both sides may want to know how much individuals followed the trial.

Murray's lawyers said they're concerned about the amount of publicity that Anthony received, suggesting that jurors might have to be sequestered to ensure Murray gets a fair trial.

Nine medical staff to give evidence at Jackson trial

Michael Jackson was mentally unstable at the time he died.

That will be the verdict of nine medical staff and other witnesses who are poised to give evidence at the trial of Dr Conrad Murray.

The star's personal doctor stands accused of involuntary manslaughter following the singer’s sudden death in June 2009.

Jackson died allegedly from an acute intoxication of Propofol which Dr Conrad stands accused of giving him.

But 103 witnesses will state that Dr Conrad is innocent and the superstar’s death was not helped by his erratic behaviour and demanding personality.

One of the witnesses will be Dr. Arnold Klein – a dermatologist who Murray's lawyers previously blamed for getting Michael addicted to painkillers – and Cherilyn Lee, a nurse who claims the 'Thriller' hitmaker asked her for Propofol in the weeks leading up to his death.

A source said: "Cherilyn is prepared to testify at the trial and tell the truth. Cherilyn has never spoken with anyone from the District Attorney's office. She was interviewed in the weeks after Jackson's death by the coroner and the LAPD. Cherilyn hasn't heard from those agencies since that time."

Jury selection for the trial begins on September 8, with opening arguments scheduled to begin on September 26.

The eagerly anticipated case is expected to last until November with Dr Conrad facing a jail term of up to four years if convicted.

Judge questions prosecution evidence in Conrad Murray trial

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Evidence intended to prove Michael Jackson could not have caused his own death may not be allowed in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, the judge said Wednesday.

Murray's defense is built on the theory that Jackson drank propofol, the surgical anesthetic the coroner concluded killed him, while the doctor was away from his bedside on the morning of June 25, 2009.

Prosecutors want jurors to hear expert testimony based on a recent experiment conducted on six university students in Chile they argue proves there is "zero possibility that the propofol was orally ingested."

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor raised questions about the experiment in a hearing Wednesday.

"I need more information about the underlying data since it is not a scientific published article," Pastor said. "I don't know the source of the information."

The judge will allow a prosecution expert to testify about a study on piglets conducted at a veterinary college in Norway, a report defense attorneys argued has nothing to do with how oral ingestion of propofol would affect a human.

The study involved five piglets that "have propofol suppositories shoved up their rectums and they are watched to see if they went to sleep," defense attorney Michael Flanagan said. "The rectum is at the other end of the (gastrointestinal) system."

Murray, who was hired as Jackson's personal physician as the singer rehearsed for comeback concerts, is charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors contend Murray used a makeshift IV drip to administer propofol intended to help Jackson sleep, a practice they argue violated the standard of care and led to the pop icon's death.

Jury selection for the trial is set to start Thursday morning when about 160 potential jurors gather in the downtown Los Angeles courthouse to fill out questionnaires to determine if they are qualified to hear the case.

Opening statements in the trial, which will be televised, are expected to be delivered on September 27.

Lawyers in Michael Jackson case to meet with judge

    By Alan Duke, CNN
    September 15, 2011 -- Updated 0805 GMT (1605 HKT)

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The judge in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor will meet with lawyers Thursday to clear up any last issues before the final phase of jury selection starts next week.

Dr. Conrad Murray's defense lawyers and the prosecutors are busy this week studying what 145 potential jurors wrote on a 30-page questionnaire designed to help them chose the jury that will hear the case.

The process is designed to find 18 Los Angeles County residents qualified to sit in judgment of Murray.

The questionnaire, about 30 pages long, is being used to determine if the potential jurors can put aside biases and what they've heard about the pop star's death to reach a fair verdict. Lawyers will question them about their answers when they return to court September 23.

Murray defense lawyer Ed Chernoff and his team will study answers to the jury questionnaire to determine which potential jurors have already made up their minds about Murray's guilt. They did this once before, but the trial was delayed over the summer.

"One of the things that we learned in the case the last go-around in the jury selection, it's absolutely shocking how many jurors think already they know everything about this case," Chernoff said.

Last week, Murray's defense team failed to convince Judge Michael Pastor, as well as an appeals court, to shelter jurors from trial media coverage by keeping them sequestered in a hotel for the duration of the trial, expected to last about a month.

The Los Angeles coroner has ruled that the singer's death on June 25, 2009, was caused by an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol, combined with other drugs.

Prosecutors have accused Murray, who served as Jackson's personal and full-time physician at the time, of having a role in the overdose.

They contend that Murray used a makeshift IV drip to administer propofol intended to help Jackson sleep, a practice they argue violated the standard of care and led to the pop icon's death.

If convicted on the involuntary manslaughter charge, Murray could face up to four years in prison.

Opening statements for the trial, which will be televised, are scheduled for September 27. The judge told the jury pool he expects their service will be over on or about October 28.

Key witness against Michael Jackson's doctor is missing

Los Angeles (CNN) -- A man who testified earlier that he shipped large amounts of the surgical anesthetic propofol to Dr. Conrad Murray in the weeks before Michael Jackson's death apparently moved out of the United States and cannot be located for this month's trial, prosecutors told the judge Thursday.

The coroner ruled that Jackson died on June 25, 2009 as the result of an overdose of propofol combined with other drugs.

The judge scheduled two additional hearings for next week to decide if the prosecution can use the missing witness' previous testimony and to get a head start on the last phase of jury selection in the involuntary manslaughter trial of the pop star's doctor.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said the hearings will help keep Murray's trial on track for face-to-face questioning of potential jurors September 23.

Prosecutors want to use the previous testimony of Tim Lopez, given at Murray's preliminary hearing last January, because they've been unable to contact him since he moved to Thailand. Pastor said prosecutors must show Monday that they have done everything possible to reach Lopez.

A hearing Monday morning will also consider the prosecution's request to exclude the testimony of Jackson's makeup artist. The defense wants Karen Faye to repeat statements given in interviews about what she described as Jackson's ill health in the weeks before his death, as he was rehearsing for his comeback concerts.

The prosecution told the judge in a hearing Thursday that much of what Faye has said in the past is based on what she heard others say, not her own recollections.

The judge will also consider if the defense can call a Texas medical examiner to testify about his inspection of the Los Angeles County coroner's facilities and practices. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said Thursday that his testimony is not relevant to the Murray case.

The judge again raised questions about the prosecution's plan to present testing done on university students in Chile who voluntarily swallowed propofol, the drug the coroner said was partly responsible for Jackson's death. They must overcome defense objections that the study was never published or reviewed by other scientists.

The prosecution wants to argue that the experiments disprove the defense theory that Jackson died after he drank the drug, not from an injection given by Dr. Murray.

Pastor also scheduled a hearing for next Wednesday afternoon to begin the process of deciding which potential jurors should be dismissed "for cause." Both sides will be able to challenge jurors based on their answers given to 113 questions posed to them in writing last week.

Defense lawyer Nareg Gourjian said he only received the defense copy of the 30-page questionnaire responses Wednesday. Lawyers for both sides have only until next week to study the 145 jurors' answers to determine if the potential jurors can put aside biases and what they've heard about the singer's death to reach a fair verdict.

Lawyers will question them about their answers when they return to court September 23 to find 18 Los Angeles County residents qualified to sit in judgment of Murray.

Prosecutors have accused Murray, who served as Jackson's personal and full-time physician at the time, of having a role in the fatal overdose.

Jury selection for Conrad Murray trial nears end

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The Los Angeles citizens who will decide if Michael Jackson's doctor is criminally responsible for the pop icon's death should be selected by Friday afternoon, an attorney says.

"I think we can get a fair jury," Michael Flanagan, one of three defense lawyers for Dr. Conrad Murray, said at the end of Wednesday's jury selection hearing.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor is meeting with lawyers for both sides behind closed doors again Thursday afternoon to decide which of the 145 potential jurors in the jury pool should be stricken "for cause."

The process is designed to remove anyone from the jury pool with a bias they cannot put aside to decide the case.

"There's a fair number we agreed on," Deputy District Attorney David Walgren told the court Wednesday.

The potential jurors remaining in the pool will gather in court Friday morning for face-to-face questioning by the lawyers, a process called "voir dire."

"I think voir dire is going to go very fast," Flanagan said after Wednesday's session.

While most judges allow defense lawyers an hour to question potential jurors, Pastor is allowing just 20 minutes for each side, Flanagan said.

"Twenty minutes is a pretty short period of time," Flanagan said. "You can't say 'hi' to everybody in 20 minutes."

It is expected 12 jurors and at least four alternates will be chosen by the end of court Friday.

Murray, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death, would face up to four years in prison if the jury finds him guilty.

The "for cause" strikes will be based mostly on written answers potential jurors gave to 113 questions earlier this month.

Lawyers have had a week to study the questionnaire responses, a process they went through once before in April before the trial was delayed for several months.

"One of the things that we learned in the case the last go-around in the jury selection, it's absolutely shocking how many jurors think already they know everything about this case," defense lawyer Ed Chernoff said in an interview last week with Jean Casarez, a reporter with CNN sister network In Session.

Opening statements for the trial, which will be televised, are scheduled for September 27. The judge told members of the jury pool he expects their service will be over on or about October 28.

The Los Angeles coroner has ruled that Jackson's death on June 25, 2009, was caused by an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol, combined with other drugs.

Prosecutors have accused Murray, who served as Jackson's personal and full-time physician at the time, of having a role in the overdose.

They contend Murray used a makeshift intravenous drip to administer propofol intended to help Jackson sleep, a practice they argue violated the standard of care and led to the pop music icon's death.

Michael Jackson death: Choreographer Ortega to be first witness

Prosecutors contend that at the time Murray brushed off Ortega and other concert executives, he was giving Jackson nightly doses of the surgical anesthetic on which the singer later overdosed. In comments to a judge Monday, Deputy Dist. Atty. David Walgren said he planned to summon witnesses in a chronological order leading up to and then following Jackson’s death.

Ortega is to be followed to the stand by Paul Gongaware, who worked for Jackson’s concert promoter, AEG Live. Gongaware, according to another prosecutor, will also testify about conversations with Murray and Jackson.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Deborah Brazil said Gongaware would testify about a meeting in which he and other AEG officials “were sharing their concerns with the defendant concerning Mr. Jackson’s health.”
